Read Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving grateful praise.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Go Deeper

Psalm 100 serves as a powerful reminder of the fact that the Lord reigns as King and we are His people. Through no effort or accomplishments of our own doing, the Lord has invited us into His eternal presence. He’s worthy of our praise and worship, songs of joy, and eternal gratitude. When we’re faithless, His faithfulness endures through all generations.

Yet, when we’re honest with ourselves, we forget about this amazing, undeserving invitation we’ve received. We don’t shout for joy and our hearts are often filled with complaint and comparison, rather than gladness, gratitude, and joy. Many Sundays, we find ourselves going through the motions as we sing songs, pray, and listen to a sermon.

Would someone ever accuse you of “shouting for joy to the Lord”? What does it look like to live a life that shouts out in joy to the Lord? The world, and even the church, is not marked by this type of “joy-shouting” life. In moments of authentic reflection, you might admit your life looks like the lives of those in the rest of the world. We’re often no different than our non-believing friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors.

We’ve been invited into the courts of the living God. The psalmist wrote this psalm around three thousand years ago. The Son died on the cross for our sins two thousand years ago. But the Father’s love endures forever, and His faithfulness continues for generation after generation after generation (and so on!).

Take a moment to reread this short psalm. It’s only five verses—certainly you can read it or listen to it again. Be reminded of His enduring, never-ending, faithful love for you. Take a moment to thank Him for it. And don’t be afraid to shout for joy to Him in worship and in the way you live your life today. (Just don’t wake up your roommates or any sleeping family members!)

Questions

  1. How would your closest friends describe your relationship with the Lord? Would they say it’s marked by thanksgiving and praise?
  2. Write down three reasons why you are thankful to the Lord. You can even make this a daily practice as you read The Bible Reading Plan.
  3. The psalmist reminds us this invitation is for all the earth. Take a moment and pray for the people of another country, that they would know the Lord.

Sometime today or in the next week, check out the three-part series from Harris Creek called “The Shepherd in the Psalm”. This series is a deep-dive on Psalm 23, where you can be reminded of the relationship between The Lord (The Good Shepherd) and His sheep (His people).

  1. This Psalm immediately reminded me of Darlene Zschech who sang ‘Shout to the Lord’ many yrs ago!
    It’s still so wonderful and relevant today. This morning in devotion the scripture was about rejoicing in the Lord, I will say it again rejoice!
    We have much to rejoice in when we remember to call on our merciful God and Saviour! 🙏

    On my second read of Psalm 100, I noted the verbs that precede thanksgiving: Shout, worship, come, know, enter, give. All denote actions of a thankful heart in response to our ever faithful Lord. I was also reminded of Luke 19 as Jesus makes his triumphal entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey, and the people shout “Hosanna, hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” The Pharisees asked Jesus to silence the crowd to which Jesus replied, “ I tell you, if these [people] keep silent, the stones will cry out in praise!” (AMP) I want to join the greatest reason ever to celebrate that God is establishing his eternal kingdom and we get to be part of it.

  3. I am excited for heaven. I will have a new body, no fear of what people will think when I do shout for joy to the Lord, to be able to get on my knees and prostrate before the King of Kings without fear of being able to get back up. My WOOHOO’s will be joined with others in a constant state of magnificent adoration of God’s glory. I long for the day! BUT GOD has things for me/us to do here and now. To tell others about Jesus, what He paid for me/us to be able to happy and joyful in this day for these minutes. If and when we feel down and out this is a good Psalm to read over and sing

    God I will Make a joyful noise to the You LORD, all the earth!
    I will serve the You LORD with gladness!
    Today I come into Your presence with singing!
    God I know that the You are LORD, and You are God!
    It is You who made me, and I am Yours;
    I am Your people, and the sheep of Your pasture.
    I am and will enter Your gates with thanksgiving,
    and Your courts with praise!
    God I give thanks to You; I will and am going to bless Your name!
    For the LORD is good;
    Your steadfast love endures forever,
    and Your faithfulness to all generations.
    God to You be the glory and thank You that these minutes of this day I can think on this Psalm to be in Your courts with thanksgiving in Jesus name amen
    WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. 5 “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.“

    I have always loved Psalm 100!

    I used to tell my kids that in the original Hebrew it read “enter his basketball courts with praise” . . . they never believed me!

    And there it is again, “his love endures forever”!
