Read Genesis 49
Jacob Blesses His Sons
1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.
2 “Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob;
listen to your father Israel.
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my might, the first sign of my strength,
excelling in honor, excelling in power.
4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it.
5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers—
their swords are weapons of violence.
6 Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,
for they have killed men in their anger
and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury, so cruel!
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel.
8 “Judah, your brothers will praise you;
your hand will be on the neck of your enemies;
your father’s sons will bow down to you.
9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah;
you return from the prey, my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he to whom it belongs shall come
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
11 He will tether his donkey to a vine,
his colt to the choicest branch;
he will wash his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes will be darker than wine,
his teeth whiter than milk.
13 “Zebulun will live by the seashore
and become a haven for ships;
his border will extend toward Sidon.
14 “Issachar is a rawboned donkey
lying down among the sheep pens.
15 When he sees how good is his resting place
and how pleasant is his land,
he will bend his shoulder to the burden
and submit to forced labor.
16 “Dan will provide justice for his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan will be a snake by the roadside,
a viper along the path,
that bites the horse’s heels
so that its rider tumbles backward.
18 “I look for your deliverance, Lord.
19 “Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders,
but he will attack them at their heels.
20 “Asher’s food will be rich;
he will provide delicacies fit for a king.
21 “Naphtali is a doe set free
that bears beautiful fawns.
22 “Joseph is a fruitful vine,
a fruitful vine near a spring,
whose branches climb over a wall.
23 With bitterness archers attacked him;
they shot at him with hostility.
24 But his bow remained steady,
his strong arms stayed limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,
because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
25 because of your father’s God, who helps you,
because of the Almighty, who blesses you
with blessings of the skies above,
blessings of the deep springs below,
blessings of the breast and womb.
26 Your father’s blessings are greater
than the blessings of the ancient mountains,
than the bounty of the age-old hills.
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among his brothers.
27 “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;
in the morning he devours the prey,
in the evening he divides the plunder.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.
The Death of Jacob
29 Then he gave them these instructions: “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. 31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.”
33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.
Go Deeper
We’ve all heard the phrase (and tried to believe it!), “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” It’s something you say over and over again as a kid to help you forget what was just said about you. But the longer you live, the more you realize how inaccurate that statement is. Words create memories. Words have a long shelf life. Words are powerful.
It’s amazing how long you might hold onto words that someone spoke over you. Whether it was a teacher telling you about your potential, or a boss that was proud, or conversely, a parent who was disappointed. We latch onto words, and they have the power to strengthen or to tear down. It’s almost like Solomon was right in Proverbs 18:21, when he wrote, “The tongue has the power of life and death.”
This chapter is such a beautiful picture of how to use your words well. Jacob’s last gift to his children are these words that he chose to speak over them. They would no doubt remember these words for the rest of their lives. The act of blessing someone in the Old Testament carried a great significance and the importance was not lost on Jacob’s sons.
What words do you think people will remember from you? Will they remember your sarcasm? Will they remember your gossip and cynicism? Or will they remember your encouragement? This chapter should be a reminder to us to leave a legacy of wise and thoughtful words. Jesus even warns against careless speech, saying in Matthew 12:36 that “everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.” Our words are impacting those around us, whether we know it or not. Speak with intentionality today!
Questions
Which blessing is your favorite? Why?
Who has spoken into your life? How has it helped you in your walk with Jesus?
How can you learn to speak with intentionality?
Did You Know?
Jacob’s words over Judah are now seen as a prophecy of what Jesus would later accomplish. Jesus would come from the line of Judah and have the “ruler’s staff” and the “obedience of the nations will be his.” It’s amazing that God used Jacob’s blessing to foreshadow His plan that would come true generations later.

I enjoyed what was said in the Go Deeper section. I have often said that old adage of sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me was so so incredible wrong. Words are the most powerful weapon. You will most likely forget a physical trauma but the words someone said to you, over you or about you will be a constant replay in your head. So be careful little tongue what you say. That Sunday school song is very right on.
O be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little eyes what you see
For the Father up above
Is looking down in love
So, be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little ears what you hear
O be careful little tongue what you say
O be careful little hands what you do
O be careful little feet where you go
O be careful little heart whom you trust
O be careful little mind what you think
O be careful little mind what you think
For the Father up above
Is looking down in love
So, be careful little mind what you think
So, be careful little mind what you think
God, I have to fully rely on You. The world around is in severe tribulation. The nations freedom is no longer free. BUT YOU GOD are still soverign. I have to rise up, do my part. Speaking about what Jesus did for me, no matter the cost. Thank You God for helping me guard my thoughts and my tongue so that I glorify You. God my joy is so overflowingly full, I feel lke effervesing bubbles. God help me to not contain them, help me bubble all around people so they can see Your joy. God in these minutes of this day, give me Your words, Your love goggles, ears to hear and listen to Your voice. God thank You for Your Word to learn from in Jesus name amen.
WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1 “Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.”
Such a responsibility that Jacob/Israel had to speak words over his children. He sought to be encouraging yet forthright to each of them. In the past, his words and actions had incited jealousy and division among his children. He seems to be improving!
Let my words be encouraging yet forthright.
In my bible, the chapter is prefaced by the title, Jacob Blesses His Sons. Some of the things Jacob says to certain sons don’t quite ring as a “blessing” to me. For example to Reuben, ” you will no longer excel”, or to Simeon and Levi, “I will scatter them..” Perhaps I have a ‘nowsdays’ thought of blessing meaning always something positive. But, I struggled with some of Jacob’s words sounding like a blessing over some of his sons.
If I look at it as Jacob just foretelling what will happen in the days to come, then things take on a different light for me. Near the end of the chapter it says, “…he blessed them, giving them each the blessing appropriate to him.” And again, it made me rethink my definition of what a blessing is. This chapter was a bit of a struggle for me and how I see a blessing.
What a treasure scripture is as it has been preserved for thousands of years as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path! Words spoken by humans carry weight, but what we can completely trust are the words God speaks over us. “The benefits and blessings bestowed upon us as redeemed children of God are more numerous than we can count.” Our inheritance and identity are firmly rooted in Christ.
This narrative today is speaking volumes to me this morning. So many times, I have opened my mouth and inserted my foot. I would like to say unknowingly, but was it? Honestly, my words are not to intentionally hurt, yet they have. Lord, forgive me as I journey forward continually seeking Your wisdom, strength and discipline. May my words not be spoken carelessly, but be to build up, encourage and not tear down.
“Everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. “Matthew 12:36
